Playing with Layouts

Posted on May 20th, 2007 in Blogging | No Comments »

I’m trying to find a new blog layout I like. My apologies for any odd behavior over the next few days while I sort things out. If you have any feedback, favorite themes, please let me know.

Wordplay

I came across Brad Hill’s post on codes of conduct (and why the Blogger Code is a bad idea.) Although I agree, that’s not why I’m writing. This post is about the following question Brad asked:

Society writes laws that most people already agree about and follow. Burglery is against the law because most people aren’t burglars. Those who are burglars toss aside the law to burgle. (Is there a more amusing verb than “to burgle”?)

The response in the post’s comments:

(yes, to hamburgle)

I was laughing out loud. Awesome.

We just released CouponLooker - an online coupon search engine - and a blog widget for coupon code searches within your blog today. Try out the site and let me know what you think. Our goal was to provide a site for users that aggregated coupon code information from the top coupon sites on the web to make it easier for users to save money when shopping online. This is in the spirit of doing work so users don’t have to.

Stats are addictive

Posted on January 24th, 2007 in Blogging, Technology | No Comments »

As someone new to the blogging world, seeing the wealth of stat-related tools out here has been eye-opening. I find myself wishing my Google Analytics and Feedburner statistics updated more frequently so I could see in real-time what was happening on my blog. There are lessons here that should be applied to user generated content. Showing people how often their content gets looked at, bookmarked, clicked on etc can only help drive user engagement. In addition, most people act to optimize any metric they look at regularly. If you can line up the stats with the behavior you hope to encourage, you have a built-in incentive for your users to continue to do the things you want them to do.
